MONUMEMENTO

online project, digital platform, 2018

MONUMEMENTO is an online collaborative project originally commissioned by the 2018 Digital Writers’ Festival.

Working with Louise Truc, an artist from France, and Nadezhda Chernyakevich, a curator from Russia, we communicated across the internet, attempting to construct a collective memory and personal encyclopaedia of monuments and symbolism for the everyday. The project, whose title comes from the words monument and memento, uses text and imagery to link physical objects to accounts of personal memory and the nation-state. It questions the flexibility of collectivised memory and the possibilities of comprehending meaning when the codes are obscured. Looking at borders, language, and identity creation, we were interested in creating an online space that dealt with the phenomenon of post-internet aesthetics and used the visual and verbal features of the internet to create a new form of language connection between us. Using an online platform called Padlet, we collaboratively joined personal narratives and imagery together into one form; a new landscape, a memory, collectively constructed.

Treat everything sincerely and with irony. The place from which we (I? you? they?) speak is always occupied by someone else. Transgress from visual to verbal and then back. Get outside and you will find yourself in a total installation.
